From High School in the Bronx to a Rhodes Scholar at Cambridge

Julia James

Raised by her extended family in Brooklyn, NY, Julia James received a scholarship to Hobart and William Smith Colleges planning to write the next great American novel. Expecting to get her science requirement out of the way, she enrolled in chemistry during her first semester and fell in love with it. With support from her professor and mentor, Carol Parish, who encouraged Julia to engage in research in her lab, she went on to major in Biochemistry and become a Rhodes Scholar. ACS Scholar Julia James recently received her D.Phil. in Clinical Medicine from Oxford University.

ACS Scholars receive financial aid that is enriched through mentoring and internships. All contributions to the program are used exclusively to provide scholarships for gifted minority students with financial need.
