Science Policy Fellowships
Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program
Provides early career individuals with the opportunity to spend 12 weeks at the National Academies in Washington, DC learning about science and technology policy and the role that scientists and engineers play in advising the nation. The program is open to all U.S. citizens or U.S. lawful permanent residents who have completed their graduate studies (degree awarded) within the last 5 years. This includes graduate science and engineering students, postdoctoral students, and professional school students (e.g, MBA, JD, MS, MD). The program accepts less than 10% of applicants. A stipend is provided for living expenses ($8,500 in 2014), but no travel expenses.
Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program
The PMF Program's fellowship provides a full-time paid position with benefits for two years with a participating Federal Agency. Once you are selected as a finalist, you have to find a position with an agency. The program provides 160 hours of classroom training (on leadership, management, policy and other topics, 80 hours in each of the two years of the program), challenging work assignments, feedback, at least one 4 to 6 month developmental assignment, promotion potential, and immediate conversion to a permanent or term position upon completion. John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowships
This program is designed for highly qualified graduate students who have an interest in ocean, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. Accepted fellows are matched with "hosts" in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington, D.C. area, for a one year paid fellowship. Applications must be submitted by Feb 15th, and the appointment runs February 1- January 31. Students are provided with $45,000 for living expenses (per diem), with a small addition for health insurance and some moving expenses.
The Google Policy Fellowship program offers undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer contributing to the public dialogue on these issues, and exploring future academic and professional interests. Fellows will receive a stipend of $7,500 for 10 weeks during the summer of 2013(June-August).
American Institute of Biological Sciences Graduate Student Public Policy Internship
The ASM-AIBS Public Policy Internship is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public policy at the national level. By working with the AIBS Public Policy Office, the intern will learn how scientific societies, non-governmental organizations (NGO's), executive branch agencies (e.g., NSF, USGS), and the legislative branch interact to craft science policy. Paid and unpaid internships are occasionally available.
The Women’s Research & Education Institute WREI Congressional Fellows on Women and Public Policy
WREI awards annual fellowships to a select number of graduate students with a proven commitment to equity for women. WREI Fellows gain practical policymaking experience and graduate credit as they work from January to August as Congressional legislative aides in Washington, D.C. Fellows receive stipends for tuition and living expenses.
The Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS)
Full-time legislative and public policy fellowships in Washington, D. C. running from September – May. Applications due in March. Program stipend and complimentary roundtrip airline ticket sponsored by Southwest.
Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI)
Nine month paid Graduate Fellowship Program available to exceptional Latinos who have earned at least a master's degree within three years of the program start. Participants have the option of changing placements mid-way through the program to The White House, federal agencies or a nonprofit organization. Pay was $26,000 and a domestic round-trip transportation to Washington, D.C. in 2013.
Talented Latinos who have earned a bachelor's degree within two years of the program start date can apply for a paid, nine-month Public Policy Fellowship, Ausgust through May. Stipend was $21,600 in 2013.
Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Fellowships
Two year fellowship (September through May two years later) working in the office of a member of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) in Washington DC, open to those who have a graduate or professional degree completed prior to the start date fellowship program. Fellows are paid an annual salary of $40,000, with benefits, and responsible for their own travel, housing and other expenses. Six to nine fellowships are awarded each year, to less than 10% of all applicants.
AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships
- Policy Fellowships - Must have a doctoral-level degree to apply for this one-year program, sometimes renewable for a second year. Appointments run Sept 1 through Aug 31. Stipends vary, and range from $55,000 to more than $85,000.
- AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program - This is a 10-week summer program for science, engineering and mathematics students who want to research, write and report complex scientific issues to the public.
American Chemical Society (ACS) Public Policy Fellowships
ACS Congressional Fellowship places scientists as staff members in the office of a Senator, Representative, or Committee. Run through AAAS.
ACS Science Policy Fellowship places one fellow in the ACS Office of Public Affairs (OPA) for one to two years, starting in September.
John Bahcall Public Policy Fellowship
One-year postdoctoral level appointment for early career PhD level astronomers.
California Science and Technology Policy Fellowships
Place early career, PhD level scientists and engineers in the California State Legislature for one-year appointments in Sacramento, CA. The fellowships are ideal for qualified applicants who are interested in improving the interface between science and legislative decision-making and who want to learn the public policy decision-making process. Fellowships run Nov 1 through Oct 31, with a stipend of $45,000, plus up to $4,000 in actual relocation costs (for moves over 50 miles).
Hellman Fellowship in Science and Technology Policy
One year position for early-career PhD scientists or Master’s degrees engineers or computer scientists to learn about a career in public policy and administration by working at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Competitive stipend.
American Political Science Association Congressional Fellowship Program
Nine month position serving on a congressional staff.
Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Fellows Program
Two-year energy technology position for PhD level scientists/engineers who have received their degree within the past 3 years. Located in Washington, DC, working with entrepreneurs and researchers in academia and industry to positively impact the future of energy. ARPA-E Fellows do not perform laboratory research and do not directly engage in policymaking, but Perform primary technical and economic analyses. Fellows are full-time federal employees, with salary and benefits. Applications accepted in the spring.
One year assignment at the US Department of State as a science advisor on foreign policy issues for tenured, or similarly ranked, faculty from U.S. institutions of higher learning who are U.S. citizens. May involve extended stays at US foreign embassies and/or missions. Applications accepted fall through mid-January.
Aldo Leopold Leadership Program
Two two-week training sessions in successive Junes, for midcareer academic environmental researchers who want to learn how to make a positive impact on decision-making about the environment and sustainability. No direct financial award, but travel, accommodations and meals are provided.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows
Fellowship is a 12-month residential position in Washington DC for mid-career health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care. They begin in January.
