ACS Kids Day - 2013

June 17, 2013

ACS Kids Day 2013 was a record breaker! Over 100 1st through 8th graders came to ACS with a parent, aunt, uncle, or grandparent. Grown-up involvement was higher than ever, too, with partcipation from ACS staff, program “graduates,” summer interns, and Green Chemistry Conference attendees.

Our ACS Kids Day program is all about sharing chemistry with children. The ACS kids--with adults in tow--visited hands-on activity stations, watched demostrations, and even got to have their picture taken with a mole!

Thanks, ACS Staff!

Goody bags were especially generous this year, thanks to staff who kept their eyes and ears open all year long for extra items the kids would enjoy. This, plus souvenirs from the morning’s activities, meant that children took away many happy reminders of their day at ACS.

A Word from Our Co-Chairs...

"Co-chairing the event with Patti Galvan was absolutely amazing. She was the Chair for the past events and she brought with her all the experience about the activities and as well made sure that the kids had all materials they needed. I felt like it was the perfect “combination”. I took care of the planning and logistics and she took care of the activities setup and materials. It was the first time we had such a big event and it just worked as we expected, perfect. We surely had a blast!"

"I’m proud of the way that ACS Kids Day has grown and developed, especially when you consider how it all began: Over a decade ago, a staff council representative suggested that ACS join the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work movement with a program for kids and their ACS grown-ups. Staff Council piloted this new idea and, through the work of many staff members over the years devoting their time and talents, developed a program ACS staff and their children really value."

ACS Kids Day is a Staff Council event. Staff council members, Kelen Fureigh and Patricia Galvan chaired the planning committee with many new and several veteran volunteers and summer interns from across the society. By having this event in conjunction with the Green Chemistry Conference, the children of ACS staff were able to take advantage of both ACS annual events for kids!
