Scholarship Programs for Senior Academics/Faculty

Research grants to fund collaborative projects over 3 years between US investigators and their counterparts in Austria, Brazil, France, Israel, Japan, Luxembourg, Russia, and Taiwan. Proposals may only be submitted by academic institutions and/or organizations involved in educational or research activities.

This year long program includes a series of three seminar meetings, a Fulbright exchange experience and multi-disciplinary team-based research work on designated research themes: Science, Technology and Innovation; Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Energy. Applicants must be from Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean or the United States and must have expertise in one of these programmatic themes.

Five grants are available for academics and professionals (with minimum ten years professional experience) to teach and/or conduct research in any Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline at their host institution in Brazil.

One grant is available for academics to teach graduate and undergraduate courses, organize seminars and develop collaborative research at the Federal University of Western Para (UFOPA) in Brazil. Preference will be given to the disciplines of Engineering and Environmental Sciences.

One grant is available for academics to teach graduate and undergraduate courses, organize seminars and develop collaborative research at universities in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Preference will be given to the disciplines of Chemistry, Engineering and Geology. The recipient of this grant can select up to two Brazilian or U.S young researchers for postdoctoral fellowships to help with the development of the research activities.

Up to 25 grants are available for academics and professionals (with minimum five years’ experience) to teach and/ or conduct research in the areas of science, technology and innovation. Applications sought in all appropriate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields as well as proposals in areas of public and global health.

Awards grants to U.S academics and professionals to engage in short-term collaborative 2-6 week projects in over 100 countries worldwide. Applications to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster for a 5 year term are open all year around. Eligible institutions who want to host a Fulbright Specialist may submit applications through their local Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy.

Key Dates: Application dates are open on a rolling basis, all-year round. Completed applications are reviewed in cycles scheduled throughout the year, usually two months after submission.


Individuals with a PhD degree and an outstanding record of scientific accomplishments are eligible for the FAPESP Visiting Reseacher Program to work in a research institution in the State of São Paulo for a period of 2 weeks to a maximum of 12 months (non-extendable). Proposals need to be submitted by host investigators who must also have a PhD (or equivalent) and be associated with a research institution in São PauloFAPESP can also be contacted to assist with finding a potential host in São Paulo.

Key Dates: Proposals can be submitted any time of the year with a lead time of about 75 days for the final decision on the proposal.


Foreign researchers or professionals can apply for this grant to collaborate on developing lines of research or technological development. The duration is for 3-12 months and can be renewed for another 12 years.

This grant is applicable for researchers and professionals who are willing to stay in Brazil for 1-3 months a year, for a period of 2-3 years to strengthen research and international collaboration.

This program jointly funded by FAPESP and NSF encourages U.S researchers and students to propose and participate in new initiatives to catalyze international collaboration. Proposals can be made for workshops, pilot projects and other activities and could be developed in up to 3 years. Each proposal must have two Principal Investigators, one in São Paulo State and one in the U.S. who will be the central contacts for the management of the project regarding their respective agency.
