Programs in Japan: K-12 Schools

The CIEE High School Abroad Program sends US high school graduates to Japan for 6-12 months. Candidates must have a minimum GPA of at least 3.0 and must be between 15-17 years of age. At least two years of Japanese language study is preferable and candidates should be able to pass Level 5 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or equivalent.

Key Dates: Application deadline is October 1, 2014 for the 2015 Spring Semester (runs March-June 2015). Application deadlines for the 2014 Fall Semester and the 2014-15 Academic Year are now closed. Check program website for updated information.


The CIEE Gap Year Abroad Program sends US high school graduates to Japan for 3-9 months. Awardees are offered the chance to study Japanese and to participate in volunteer efforts such as instruction of English as a second language. Candidates must be high school graduates.
