ACS Local Section, Division, and Region Treasurer’s Finance Session

The ACS Local Section, Division, and Region Treasurer’s Finance Session was held in conjunction with the ACS National Meeting in San Francisco, CA on August 12, 2014. Facilitated by the ACS Financial Services unit, the workshop covered topics including: Providing the tools to help you with your financial management; Preparing for compliance with IRS requirements; Charitable contribution and legacy planning; and, Whether to incorporate or not to incorporate.

Local Section Best Practices Webinar

Sponsored by the ACS Committee on Local Section Activities, three activities are presented in this webinar that should be manageable for any size local section.  The first is a NCW ChemExpo conducted by a small section for sixth grade students.  The second is an Industrial Networking Happy Hour that focuses on collaboration with local industry and partnerships with diverse groups; and the third activity encourages sustainability, member and community involvement.

Tax Compliance, Reporting, and Frequently Asked Questions

The ACS Office of Tax Compliance & Reporting, in conjunction with the Department of Member Communities, held a webinar “Tax Compliance, Reporting, and Frequently Asked Questions” for local section, division, and regional officers on December 11, 2013. Topics included: Tax exempt status of ACS affiliated organization; benefits of tax-exemption; mandatory federal tax filings and other requirements (public inspection, public support test); actions that jeopardize tax-exempt status; and frequently asked questions.

ACS Best Practices for Election Procedures

The ACS Constitution requires local sections and divisions to elect their own officers, Councilors and Alternate Councilors. However, most specifics of the election process are governed by bylaws. In this webinar, sponsored by the Committee on Nominations & Elections, proper procedures for paper and electronic balloting, handling election disputes, determining when unit bylaw changes are needed and who to contact, and tips for finding candidates are reviewed. Topics include: elections, using the Online Speaker Directory, establishing community partnerships for National Chemistry Week activities, the 2012 Annual Report and hosting a Leadership Development course. This webinar is specifically for Local Section leaders.

As a follow-up to the 2011 Leadership Institute held in January, the Committee on Local Section Activities (LSAC) reviewed a check-list for completing 2011 and transitioning into 2012. Information on available grants for new activities was provided, and a host of technology resources such as eRosters, FORMS, website hosting, the ACS Network, and many others were reviewed.
