Corannulene is a strained aromatic hydrocarbon. Because of the strain induced by the central cyclopentane ring, it is bowl-shaped rather than planar. Like many polyaromatics, it was first made in low yield by vacuum pyrolysis. Solution syntheses developed by J. S. Siegel and other researchers improved the yield, but they are wasteful and impractical to scale up. Recently, Siegel and co-workers at the University of Zurich streamlined these syntheses and produced kilogram quantities of corannulene.
