Molecule of the Week

Oroidin

March 14, 2011

Oroidin is a term used to describe a group of alkaloids found in marine sponges; it is also the name of the specific dibromo compound shown. Recently, A. Ferreira-Pereira and co-workers reported that this compound inhibits an enzyme responsible for the multidrug resistance phenotype in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The molecule may aid in the search for multidrug-resistance–avoiding anticancer drugs.
