Molecule of the Week

Tetarimycin A

February 18, 2013

Tetarimycin A is an antibiotic that was originally found in DNA taken from Arizona desert soil. S. F. Brady and colleagues at Rockefeller University (New York City) cultured Streptomyces albus bacteria in the laboratory and produced sufficient quantities of the molecule to screen for bioactivity. They found that tetarimycin A kills methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in cell cultures.
