Triptycene, or 9,10-dihydro-9,10[1’,2’]-benzenoanthracene, is a C14 hydrocarbon with D3h symmetry. Paul D. Bartlett and co-workers reported its synthesis in 1942; they named it after β€œthe triptych of antiquity, which was a book with three leaves hinged on a common axis.” Its rigid framework has been incorporated in molecular motors and certain catalyst ligands.
