Dr. Block is a specialist in political and economic sociology. He has been teaching at the University of California at Davis since 1990, where he also served as department chair. Recently, his major research focus has been on the innovation policies of the U.S. government, with support from the Ford Foundation. He is a co-author of “Where Do Innovations Come From? Tranformations in the U.S. National Innovation System, 1970-2006,” published as a working paper by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation in July 2008. His is currently editing a book, tentatively titled, Half Empty and Half Full: U.S. Innovation Policies 1969-2008, compiling major research findings on innovation. From 1974 to 1990, Dr. Block taught at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as chair from 1988 to 1990. He has written more than sixty articles and five books, his work has been translated into nine languages, and he has traveled to Asia, Europe, and Latin America to present his research findings.
Dr. Block is currently a member of the Sociological Research Association and a member of the editorial board Politics and Society, and he has served in various other editorial, board, advisory, and university capacities.
