Fred Mayes is currently the Senior Technical Advisor for the Coal, Nuclear, and Renewables programs within the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA). Prior to this appointment, Mr. Mayes led EIA’s Renewables program for 15 years. His work on that program addressed not only traditional renewable fuels programs but also alternate transportation fuels, through a program that he founded in 1993 and led through 2008. Mr. Mayes has been with the Department of Energy since 1980 and, in addition to renewable energy, has led programs in nuclear power analysis, world coal trade analysis, and the development of biomass modeling. He is a frequent speaker at energy conferences and has recently returned from presenting EIA’s renewable outlook to the Electric Utility Environment Conference in Phoenix, AZ. Prior to his employment by the Department of Energy, Mr. Mayes spend a decade at the Bureau of the Census as a mathematical statistician. He has an M.S. in mathematical statistics from George Washington University.
