On May 2, 2011, Kathy Sullivan was appointed by President Obama as assistant secretary of commerce for environmental observation and prediction and deputy administrator for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). She plays a central role in directing Administration and NOAA priority work in the areas of satellites, space weather, water, and ocean observations and forecasts to best serve American communities and businesses. As a former astronaut and first American woman to walk in space, Dr. Sullivan knows first-hand the importance of space weather.
