American Chemical Society invites news media and scientists to careers teleconference

WASHINGTON, Aug. 10, 2009 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) invites news media covering the chemical sciences and related topics, as well as scientists, to join an ACS Careers Industry Forum teleconference on career advancement opportunities in today’s global marketplace.

Scheduled for 2 – 3 p.m., Eastern Time, on Thursday, Aug. 13, the teleconference will feature ACS Past-President Catherine T. Hunt, Ph.D., Director, Technology Collaboration Development for The Dow Chemical Company. The topic is “The Chemistry of Leadership: Making Your Skills Count!”

As ACS President in 2007, Hunt championed education, collaboration and innovation, especially related to the Sustainability of Energy, Food and Water. She began her career in 1984 as a senior scientist in analytical research at Rohm and Haas after completing a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University. For nearly 25 years, she has held diverse positions in the industry, including work as a research scientist, a process chemist, and Director of the worldwide Analytical and Computational Competency Network.

Hunt is a member of the MIT Visiting Committee for the Department of Chemical Engineering. She serves on the Advisory Boards of the Rochester Institute of Technology National Technical Institute for the Deaf, and the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership. She has received numerous awards, including the “Best 50 Women in Business” in Pennsylvania (2007).

The series of teleconferences is scheduled monthly (with the exception of December) through 2009. There will be a 30-minute discussion with Hunt followed by a 25-minute Q & A session.

Scientists can tune into the conference without charge, but must register in advance at the ACS Careers Web site, which also provides information about future forums.
