American Chemical Society hosts Capitol Hill briefing on economic stimulus: Technology transfer from federal labs

WASHINGTON, July 25, 2012 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) Science & the Congress Project invites news media to attend a luncheon briefing on “Economic Stimulus: Technology Transfer from Federal Labs.” It will be held Friday, July 27, 12-1:30 p.m., in the
Rayburn House Office Building, Room B-339. To attend, register at http://tinyurl.com/ACSSciCongr-fedlabTT.

This briefing is sponsored by ACS Corporation Associates, as part of the ACS Science & the Congress Project, with honorary co-host the Technology Transfer Caucus, co-chairs U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA) and U.S. Rep. Ben Ray LujÁn (D-NM).

Innovation is a vital source of economic growth, and technology transfer from public research to private development is a proven route for commercializing new products. Historically, the U.S. government’s laboratories have incubated many significant discoveries as part of larger research efforts such as the Manhattan Project and the Human Genome Project. These past successes offer insights to current technology transfer efforts. How can we best nurture innovation in order to seed economic growth? What lessons can be learned regarding management styles from government-operated vs. company-operated laboratories? This panel will discuss efforts to optimize technology transfer from federal labs to ensure a sound return on public investment and creation of a robust national economy.

The briefing will feature the following panelists and an open discussion:

Moderator: Stephanie Shipp, Ph.D., Science and Technology Policy Institute, Institute for Defense Analyses

Panelists:

  • Mojdeh Bahar, National Institutes of Health
  • Brett Bosley, Battelle Memorial Institute
  • David Pesiri, Ph.D., Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • Phillip Singerman, Ph.D., National Institute of Standards and Technology
