Press Opens for “World Series of Science” American Chemical Society National Meeting & Exposition

WASHINGTON, May 14, 2012 — Journalists may now apply for press accreditation and reserve housing for the American Chemical Society (ACS) 244th National Meeting & Exposition, Aug. 19-23, 2012, in Philadelphia, Pa.

News media have described national meetings of ACS ― the world’s largest scientific society ― as the “World Series of Science” because of the scope and importance of the scientific presentations, which span science horizons from astronomy to zoology. The meeting will offer print, broadcast and online journalists a rich assortment of spot news and feature possibilities.

More than 14,000 scientists and others are expected for the August event, which will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and downtown hotels. The agenda includes more than 8,600 presentations. The topics include food and nutrition, medicine, health, sustainability, new sources of energy, the environment and other fields where chemistry plays a central role. Many presentations connect with the meeting’s theme, “Materials for Health and Medicine.”

The ACS Office of Public Affairs will operate a press center in the convention center. It will include a press conference room fully equipped for TV camera crews and HD video, as well as a news media workroom that is fully staffed to assist in arranging interviews. The press center will have wireless Internet access, telephones, computers, photocopy and fax services and refreshments.

Embargoed copies of press releases, a press conference schedule and other materials will be available in August. Reporters planning to cover the meeting from their home bases will have access to the press conferences over the Internet in ACS’ popular “Live Chat” format.
