William B. Tolman, Ph.D., named new Editor-in-Chief of Inorganic Chemistry

WASHINGTON, Oct. 23, 2012 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) announces that William (Bill) B. Tolman, Ph.D., will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of Inorganic Chemistry in January 2013. Tolman is the chair of the department of chemistry at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and currently serves as an Associate Editor of Inorganic Chemistry.

Tolman will succeed Richard Eisenberg, Ph.D., who will retire from the journal at the end of this year. Eisenberg, Tracy H. Harris Professor of Chemistry, University of Rochester, has served as Editor-in-Chief of Inorganic Chemistry since 2001. Eisenberg will assist with the transition and remain with the journal in his current role through the end of 2012.

Tolman, 51, holds a B.A. in chemistry from Wesleyan University and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. After a postdoctoral stint at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tolman joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1990, where he currently serves as Chair and Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Center for Metals in Biocatalysis. He is a fellow of both the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tolman in his new role as Editor-in-Chief. Dr. Tolman’s broad perspective in the field, coupled with his drive for innovation, will ensure the journal continues to push new boundaries and meet the needs of the diverse inorganic chemistry community,” said Susan King, Senior Vice President of the Journals Publishing Group at the American Chemical Society.

“Bill is a terrific choice,” said outgoing Editor-in-Chief Eisenberg. “The intellectual breadth of his science makes him ideally suited to lead Inorganic Chemistry.”

Associate Editor Vivian Yam, Ph.D., Philip Wong Wilson Wong Professor in Chemistry and Energy, department of chemistry, University of Hong Kong, said, “Bill has a broad research interest, spanning bioinorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry and polymer chemistry. Apart from synthesis, he also studies reactivity and the mechanistic aspect using a diverse array of spectroscopic and physical characterization techniques. His cheerful character and enthusiasm will no doubt make him a highly qualified Editor-in-Chief of Inorganic Chemistry."

Inorganic Chemistry publishes fundamental studies in all phases of inorganic chemistry. Coverage includes experimental and theoretical reports on quantitative studies of structure and thermodynamics, kinetics, mechanisms of inorganic reactions, bioinorganic chemistry and relevant aspects of organometallic chemistry, solid-state phenomena and chemical bonding theory. Emphasis is placed on the synthesis, structure, thermodynamics, reactivity, spectroscopy and bonding properties of significant new and known compounds. Inorganic Chemistry is the most cited journal in Inorganic Chemistry and has an Impact Factor of 4.601, as reported by the 2011 Journal Citation Reports® Thomson Reuters (Thomson Reuters, 2012).
