Purpose

To promote opportunities that enhance the chemical community’s awareness of and the essential role of chemistry in responding to sustainability challenges.

Description

As part of the ACS Strategic Plan Goals #2 and #4, the American Chemical Society intends to be a global leader in enlisting the world’s scientific professionals to address the challenges facing our world. It is essential to ensure that the solutions to those challenges are environmentally sustainable.

Sustainability means providing for the environmental and human health, economic and societal needs of today without compromising the progress and success of future generations. It addresses the major challenges of energy, food for a growing population, and clean drinking water.

In support of this objective, the ACS Committee on Environmental Improvement has partnered with the Local Section Activities Committee to promote opportunities that enhance the chemical community’s awareness of and the essential role of chemistry in responding response to sustainability challenges.

Chemists can have a vital role in each of these objectives.

Grants of up to $500 are available on a rolling basis to enable sustainability related programming that communicates the role of chemistry.

Applications are reviewed at each ACS Meeting and must be received four weeks in advance thereof for consideration.

This mini-grant program is designed to encourage local sections to develop programming, in the broadest possible sense, that furthers the discussion of sustainability within the chemical enterprise.

All avenues of programming will be considered, including (but not limited to) speakers at local section meetings, Science Cafés, workshops, educational programs, community events, or other innovative programming concepts.
