How are Candidates for the International District Director seat on the ACS Board of Directors selected?

  • N&E will select an initial slate of four nominees.
  • ACS Councilors will select two candidates in the Primary Elections.
  • Eligible international members will choose between these two candidates, voting to elect the Director.
  • Members may also nominate candidates via petition to the CEO.
  • The next election cycle for International District Director will occur in 2027.

What are Zone Councilors?

Zone Councilors are elected representatives of ACS members who are not part of Local Sections, including international members. They serve on the ACS Council to ensure broader representation.

Why were Zone Councilors introduced?

To provide equitable representation for ACS members who previously had no voice in Council deliberations, including those outside the U.S. and those within the U.S. not affiliated with Local Sections.

How many Zones are there, and what is their purpose?

There are six global Zones, created solely for the purpose of electing Councilors. These Zones ensure fair and inclusive representation in ACS governance. The zones were created based on geographical location. They do not have the formal structure associated with Local Sections, Districts, and Regions.

When was the Petition for Global Representation on Council approved?

It was approved by Council on August 21, 2024, confirmed by the Board on September 19, 2024, and became effective immediately.

Who manages the Zone Councilor elections?

The Committee on Nominations and Elections (N&E) is responsible for managing the Zone Councilor slates and elections. N&E works closely with the International Activities Committee and with International Chapters on soliciting nominations; N&E also welcomes nominations from members in a particular Zone, or from any other ACS member.

When will the first Zone Councilors begin serving?

The first cohort of Zone Councilors will begin their term in 2026.

Why was the Petition to Amend the Number of Councilors on N&E necessary?

With the addition of Zone Councilor elections, N&E’s workload increased. The petition added four new members to the committee to support these expanded responsibilities.
