Join ACS on Thursday, December 2nd at 12pm, ET for our monthly Virtual Office Hours, where ACS Career Consultants and experts offer their advice on specific career-related topics.
During this FREE virtual career guidance session, you will explore the many professional opportunities for chemists outside of the traditional lab setting. Our expert panelists will outline the typical tasks you can expect to perform in each field, as well as education/training requirements and personal characteristics that will help you succeed, including specific examples from their own experience.
You will also have the chance to get personalized career advice and network in small groups led by ACS Career Consultants.
This event is free and open to ACS members and non-members, but you must register to save your seat.
Themed ACS Virtual Office Hours with ACS Career Consultants are held the first Thursday of every month, at 12pm, ET.

Meet the Panelists

Kathryn Leach, Ph.D.
Kathryn (Katie) Leach graduated from the University of Rochester with her Ph.D. in physical chemistry (focus: nanomaterials). She has worked as a Research Scientist for a small environmental lab that performed contract work for the government and as a Chemistry Lecturer at Valparaiso University. She is currently serving as an Independent Contractor for McGraw-Hill, where she works on projects that support the online chemistry homework sales and marketing teams.
Katie has perspective on working in both industry and academia and has a valuable perspecitve on how layoffs can open the door to new and unexpected professional opportunities. Katie loves sharing her insights about the higher education landscape, the application portfolio, managing a family and career, and the hiring process. Katie especially loves to encourage job seekers to network, conduct that career research needed to find your next great job.

Bhaskar Venepalli, Ph.D.
Bhaskar Venepalli is President and CEO of CiVentiChem, a premier contract R&D services company which works extensively with pharmaceutical, biotech and biopharmaceutical companies. At CiVentiChem, Bhaskar has overall strategic and management responsibility for the company and was responsible for growing CiVentiChem's business internationally, including starting a subsidiary company, CiVentiChem India Pvt Ltd. Prior to joining CiVentiChem, Bhaskar was a manager in the new business development group of the Eastman Chemical Company, where he worked for 10 years.
Bhaskar has extensive knowledge of the contract R&D business including medicinal chemistry, lead optimization, drug development, manufacturing, regulatory expertise and market launch of APIs.
Bhaskar's career in academics and research includes the publication of 34 research papers in international journals and 6 in patent filings. He holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, and he completed his post-doctoral studies at Southampton University, England and the Rockefeller University, New York. He is elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, England, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, has an MBA from the University of Rochester Simon School of Business and has won numerous awards for academic achievements.
Bhaskar has been a member of American Chemical Society for the past 30 years. He has been a part of Society’s leadership development program and served as Chairman of the Society’s North Carolina Local Section in 2019.

Peter Bonk, Ph.D.
Peter (Pete) Bonk is a graduate of the University of Michigan (BS) and The University of Wisconsin (Ph.D.) and has spent his career in industry, having worked at Dow Chemical, Abbott Laboratories, Rhodes Technologies. He has been an independent consultant since 2013, serving in roles of Business Development and Technical Management for several smaller organizations.
Pete is active in the ACS, serving as Councilor of the Rhode Island Local Section and having served in the Division of Small Chemical Businesses as Chair and Program Chair.

Jamie Schwarzbach, MBA, MS
Jamie Schwartzbach is the Senior Marketing Manager, Oncology, at Natera. Jamie brings a strong background in digital and technical marketing and analytics. She is an expert in chemical synthesis and characterization with four years of chemical research experience in multiple different industries including biopharmaceuticals, mining, chemicals, nanotechnology and academia.
Jamie earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master of Science in chemistry while also receiving a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nevada-Reno.
