Committee Preferences

It is time to begin the process of making appointments to ACS Council-related committees for 2022. If you are interested in serving on an ACS Committee, the online committee preference form for committee assignments is a key way to let us know your committee preferences and your background. The online preference form will be open April 1 thru July 1, 2021 at  https://www.yellowbook.acs.org.

The use of the online system helps to streamline the approval process, and all submissions will be reviewed by the Committee on Committees (ConC) as it develops appointment recommendations during the ACS Fall Meeting. Every year, our goal is to distribute the committee appointment/reappointment letters no later than early January to give as much notice as possible. We’ve attempted to make accessing and using this online system as easy as possible. For your convenience, the Online User Guide (attached) will walk you through the process.

If you have not served on an ACS committee or held an elected office in your local section and/or division, please contact secretary@acs.org to request a Yellow Book database record be created for you. You can also use this system to update your Yellow Book contact and biographical information throughout the year (excluding your ACS Local Section and Division Offices, and ACS National Service records).

Your ACS membership must be in good standing in order to complete your committee preferences. Please make a committee preference only if you feel that you can attend and actively participate in a committee’s meetings either virtually or in-person. ACS committees are working committees; attendance (virtually or in-person) and participation at committee and subcommittee meetings are important. Also attached is the listing of Society Committees that may be of interest to you.

When assembling recommendations for appointments by the ACS President and/or Board Chair, ConC seeks to identify and involve individuals from across the Society. Members with a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives helps ensure that ACS remains relevant, innovative, and effective. Therefore, we are also encouraging local section and divisions officers to circulate the online preference information throughout their membership to encourage participation in the Society through committee service.

As you indicate your preferences, please keep in mind the following:

  • Most initial appointments to committees are for non-voting associate positions. Associates are appointed for one-year terms and must also complete the preference form in order to seek reappointment on the committee in which they currently serve. Consultants are appointed for a term of one-year and must have a clearly-defined role or project that requires their presence. Associates and consultants also are not eligible to vote on official committee motions, though they should actively participate in committee debates and subcommittee meetings, and assist the committee in other ways.
  • Those who are finishing a term or have reached the statutory limit on a committee are especially urged to complete the online form to reaffirm their interest and commitment to service in the Society.
  • You must list no less than two, but no more than four of the Society Committees on which you would prefer to serve. If you are currently serving on a committee, your current committee assignment should be listed, along with the term expiration date, as your first choice.
  • If you would like to be considered for an appointment, ConC requires that you provide specific details/rationale about your qualifications/expertise for that appointment. This is now a mandatory field, and the system will not allow you proceed unless it is complete. It is very helpful to the President, Board Chair, ConC, and to the preferred committees to have specific details about your qualifications for appointment.
  • Upon completion of your preferences and qualifications, you will receive a confirmation that will highlight your selections and show that your submissions have been received. If you do not receive a confirmation, please email me at secretary@acs.org.

We urge you to complete the online selection process as soon as possible, but no later than July 1, 2021. After that date, the online process will close and you will need to contact the Office of the Secretary to complete your preferences at that time.

ConC only makes the recommendations for committee appointments and reappointments. The ACS President and/or Board Chair, both individually and jointly, review the recommendations and make the actual appointments in late fall. Although not all can be appointed to committees, I can assure you that you will receive thorough consideration for an assignment.

If you experience any problems or need assistance during this process, please contact the Office of the Secretary at (800-227-5558, ext. 4461). Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and for all your efforts on behalf of our Society.
