Al Horvath received a BS in Accounting from the Pennsylvania State University and MBA from Duquesne University. Prior to joining ACS as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer in February 2019, Mr. Horvath served as Chief Operating Officer and Under Secretary for Finance and Administration at the Smithsonian Institution. In that role, he was responsible for financial, business and administrative activities of the largest museum, research and educational complex in the world. He served as Acting Secretary (CEO) for the Smithsonian from January through June 2015.
Prior to his time at the Smithsonian, Mr. Horvath spent more than two decades working in leadership positions for some of the leading research universities in the country including Penn State, Columbia University, California Institute of Technology, New York University, and Carnegie Mellon University. Al began his career at Mellon Bank in his hometown of Pittsburgh before moving into higher education. A native of Pittsburgh, Mr. Horvath has also served on a number of non-profit boards including the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Council on Governmental Relations (Chair) and Green Door Behavioral Health (Treasurer).
