Pushpa Murthy is Associate Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at Michigan Tech. Dr. Murthy has been a faculty member at Michigan Tech for over 30 years. During this time, Dr. Murthy had held several administrative positions including Interim Chair of the Department of Chemistry followed by Department Chair, Program Director at the National Science Foundation in the Division of Graduate Education, Associate Dean of the Graduate School and her current position of Associate Provost of Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School. Her work at NSF was in the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), the premier graduate fellowship program in the U.S.
Dr. Murthy earned her PhD at Brown University, Providence and joined the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Tech following industrial work at Stauffer Chemicals and postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan. Her field of research is bioorganic chemistry/biochemistry. She has overseen over 35 PhD and MS students during her career at Michigan Tech. She was the Director of Michigan Tech Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) from 2007 to 2012 and led the development of a maternity leave policy on campus.
Dr. Murthy serves on the advisory board of the organization COACh International, a grass-roots organization that is working to increase the number and career success of women and other underrepresented scientists and engineers through innovative programs and strategies. She conducts workshops around the world, sharing best practices with women scientists and engineers on how to address career issues that can impede their progress in STEM careers.
