Ashutosh Sharma is an Institute Chair Professor in Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur. He was Secretary to the Government of India heading its Department of Science and Technology from January 2015 to August 2021. Ashutosh received his PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo (1988), his MS from the Pennsylvania State University (1984) and B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur (1982). Ashutosh’s research contributions are highly interdisciplinary, spanning a wide range in nanotechnology; thin films; nanocomposites and devices in energy, health and environment; functional interfaces; micro/nano-mechanics of soft matter; nano-patterning and nanofabrication; colloid and interfacial engineering; biomaterials and biosurfaces; wetting and adhesion. He has published over 350 peer reviewed papers in these areas with over 20000 citations (H index 75; Google Scholar). Ashutosh is an elected Fellow of The Indian National Science Academy, Indian National Academy of Engineering and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and others. He is an associate editor of ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces (2014-); Distinguished Alumnus Awardee of IITK and SUNY Buffalo; and recipient of Bhatnagar Prize and Infosys Prize among numerous other honors and awards including several Honoris Causa D.Sc. from SUNY Buffalo, Jadavpur University etc.
