What do you love about your job?
I spent 27 years at the National Institutes of Health, mostly in peer review and management of federally funded research projects at universities and other research institutions. I enjoyed having creative Ph.D.s and M.D.s working for and with me. Most fulfilling was ensuring that federal tax dollars were spent wisely on biomedical research projects that mattered. Establishing relationships with colleagues across the entire STEM enterprise, both within and outside the federal government, were high points.
What career advice would you give your 18 year old self?
(1) worry less; (2) take more risks; (3) the best learnings take place outside the classroom
What is your dream vacation?
Anywhere that I haven't traveled to before.
If you had to wear a t-shirt with one word on it for one year, what word would you choose?
If you could instantly become an expert in something, what would it be?
Bringing people with (seemingly) irreconcilable differences together for civil conversation that leads to discovery of common ground
