What do you love about your job?
I have had two job experiences since finishing my undergraduate degree. I spent 3 years as a chemist in a semiconductor lab and just finished my 3rd year of teaching for Boise State. I enjoyed my time in industry, but I love my current job. It is an incredibly unique position that is very rewarding. I enjoy sharing my passion for chemistry with students. It is amazing the variety of career goals I see students pursue and I appreciate being a part of their journey.

What has been the most exciting part of your career so far?
The most exciting part of my career has been experiencing the different directions that a chemistry degree can take you. The 3 years I spent in industry were eye opening. The caliber of lab I was in was amazing, and so was the type of instrumentation that I got to use every day. It was a fantastic experience. I was able to seamlessly transition into my teaching position and see another side of chemistry, too. I am excited to see where my degree takes me.

What would you tell yourself at age 18?
There are so many things I would tell my 18 year old self. First and most importantly, I would tell myself that everything will work out and be okay. I was a first-generation student and college seemed pretty impossible at times, especially at the beginning. I would go back and tell myself to that the hard work pays off and to enjoy my time in college a little more by going to more events and being more involved.

How has ACS Scholars impacted your life and career?
Being an ACS Scholar had a HUGE impact on me. Due to finances, I almost didn't attend my dream school, but receiving the scholarship allowed me to go. I'm certain that I would not have thrived as well at my back-up school. My college campus was small, allowing me to know my professors well and become heavily involved in research, the chemistry club, and get a job in the campus stockroom. Being a Scholar helped to further cement my decision to pursue chemistry and I am so thankful for it.
