CCEW 2023 Webinar

The Healing Power of Chemistry: Cutting Edge Antibiotic and Gene Therapy Research | October 18, 2023
As part of National Chemistry Week's theme, “The Healing Power of Chemistry,” ACS launched a webinar featuring two scientists who are each working to meet rising challenges to our health and safety.
First, Dr. Jayanta Haldar (Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research) discussed the growing threat posed by drug-resistant bacteria through his work with Vancomycin, an antibiotic that has been lifesaving against multidrug-resistant Gram-positive infections. Then, Dr. Karmella A. Haynes (Emory University School of Medicine) discussed her lab’s research into chromatin, the DNA-protein structure that packages eukaryotic genes, and their work to investigate and design chromatin-based systems for controlling gene expression in cancer. Her lab’s approach, which they call “macrogenomic engineering," could be useful in empowering the body to intrinsically fight off cancer in addition to other applications in gene therapy.
