2012 U.S. Chemistry Olympiad Finalists (Top 20)

The US National Chemistry Olympiad Program is proud to announce the 20 finalists who will attend the Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado, June 5-20, 2012. The students will compete for one of four spots on the USA team, which will participate in the upcoming 44th International Chemistry Olympiad in Washington, D.C., July 21-30, 2012.

Sidharth Chand, 16 (11th grade)*
Detroit Country Day School, Detroit, MI

Chands favorite subjects are math and science. He would like to be a neurosurgeon.

James Deng, 16 (11th grade)*
Choate Rosemary Hall, New Haven, CT, Local Section

Deng plays the violin.

Jason Ge, 15 (10th grade)*
Westview High School, San Diego, CA, Local Section

Ge was a top 20 finalist of the 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. He is a member of the American Chemical Society ChemClub.

Andrew Guo, 18 (12th grade)**
Scarsdale High School, New York, NY Local Section

Guo was a top 20 finalist of the 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. He loves science and mathematics, and credits his love of chemistry to his science teacher, Ms. Wagner.

Christopher Hillenbrand, 15 (9th grade)*
Regis High School, New York, NY Local Section

Hillenbrand began enrolling in high school-level science courses in the fourth grade. He passed the AP Chemistry test with a perfect score by the seventh grade. In eighth grade, he earned a perfect score on the SAT Chemistry subject test. Hillenbrand credits his teacher Mr. Marionni for encouraging his passion for chemistry.

Brandon Kao, 16 (10th grade)
Valencia High School, Orange County, CA Local Section

Timothy M. Lee, 18 (12th grade)**
Arcadia High School, Southern California Local Section

Lee was a top 20 finalist of the 2010 and 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympia. He is a member of the Arcadia High School Science Bowl team, coached by his AP chemistry teacher Cherryl Mynster.

David Liang, 16 (10th grade)
Carmel High School, Indiana Local Section

Liang placed first in the Rose-Hulman High School Math Title, and he was named a Junior United States of America Mathematics Olympiad (USAMO) winner.

Runpeng Liu, 17 (11th grade)
Ladue Horton Watkins High School, St. Louis, MO Local Section

Liu enjoys math, tennis, and computers. He was a member of the second-place Missouri team in the 2009 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition.

Alexander Nie, 17 (11th grade)
Livingston High School, North Jersey Local Section

Ruifan Pei, 18 (12th grade)
Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, Northeastern Mass. Local Section

Pei was a top 20 finalist of the 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. He received a $10,000 scholarship from the Nova Biomedical Corporation.

Kalki Seksaria, 17 (11th grade)
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Chemical Society of Washington Local Section

Seksaria is also a 2011-2012 USA Computing Olympiad finalist. He plans to attend a science and technology college and double-major in computer science and either chemistry or physics.

Kevin Tie, 18 (12th grade)
East Chapel Hill High School, North Carolina Local Section

Tie was a top 20 finalist of the 2011 U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad.

Stephen Ting, 17 (11th grade)
Monta Vista High School, Santa Clara Valley, CA Local Section

Ting took his first chemistry course during the summer preceding his freshman year in high school.

Jessica Xu, 16 (11th grade)
Watchung Hills Regional High School, North Jersey Local Section

Xu attributes her success and interest in chemistry to her chemistry teachers, Michael Gangluff and Dr. Georgia Fisanick. She was a semi-finalist in the Biology Olympiad as a freshman and a sophomore. She also won a Gold Key in the National Scholastic Writing Competition at the regional level, and a Silver Medal at the national level.

Grace Zhang, 16 (11th grade)

Cindy Zhao, 15 (10th grade)
Brecksville-Broadview High School, Cleveland, OH Local Section
Zhao was a top 20 finalist of the 2011 U.S. Chemistry Olympiad. She placed first overall in the 2012 Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics state championship.

Angela Zou, 16 (11th grade)
Torrey Pines High School, San Diego, CA Local Section

Zhou is a member of the American Chemical Society ChemClub.
