Purpose

To defray registration and travel costs for underrepresented students to attend the ACS Fall 2022 National Meeting and/or any career and professional development event of the recipient's choice.

Description

This award will cover the registration, travel, and lodging costs for applicants who would like to attend the ACS Fall 2022 National Meeting and/or fees of other online workshops, courses, and virtual events.

Professional Development activities can range from technical writing courses to business management programs to scientific meetings to technical skill workshops. Students should apply for this award to refine existing skills while also learning new ones to supplement their educational and career aspirations.

Deadline

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants interested in applying for the ACS Fall 2022 National Meeting however must apply for the award by July 1st.

How to Apply

For Undergraduate Students

The award is open to undergraduate students interested in the chemical sciences and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in the Chemical Sciences. Namely, underrepresented groups include Black, Latinx, and Indigenous.The goal of this professional development award is to increase the number of UR students that gain access to doctoral programs in the chemical sciences. The professional development award will defray the cost of any online workshops, courses, virtual conferences, and/or events that will assist UR students gain access to doctoral programs in the chemical sciences. Each award will be for up to $2,000 of eligible expenses based on the review of materials.

Application Packet (Online application process)

  • Completed application form which includes a cover letter stating how and why attending the selected online workshop, conference, event, and/or course will help in the preparation of gaining access to doctoral programs in the chemical sciences, including a valid email address and mailing address. Please include the name of the workshop, conference, and/or course or event you are attending and the registration cost.
  • Curriculum vitae or resume
  • One-page document of the list of all the meetings/conferences, and/or career professional development events you are planning to attend along with the registration cost for each and total registration costs.
  • A letter of recommendation from the student’s mentor explaining why the student deserves the award and how this will help him/her gain access to doctoral programs in the chemical sciences and with overall professional development.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizen
  • Undergraduate student in the chemical sciences.

For Graduate Students

The award is open to students who are pursuing a graduate degree in the chemical sciences and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in the Chemical Sciences. Namely, underrepresented minorities include Black, Latinx, and Indigenous. The goal of this award is to advance the career and professional development of graduate students. The professional development award will defray the cost of any online workshops, courses, virtual conferences, and/or events that will assist UR graduate students in the chemical sciences with their career and professional development goals. Each award will be for up to $2,500 of eligible expenses based on the review of materials.

Reporting Requirements

Following the respective conferences or career and professional activities, awardees will be asked to draft a short summary of their experiences and share with the ACS Bridge Team Leadership.
