C. Marvin Lang

C. Marvin Lang, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, is the 1997 Helen M. Free Award for Public Outreach. Lang was cited for his long-time efforts of interpreting science to the public. Lang has made nearly 1000 presentations of chemical demonstrations, science-based lectures and chemistry workshops over the past thirty-five years. He has presented the allure of chemical reactions to students in the classrooms of colleges, high schools, grade schools, and to the general public in civic groups and senior citizen centers as well.
Lang earned a B. S. at Elmhurst College (1961), an M. S. in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin - Madison (1964) and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at the University of Wyoming (1970).
Dr. Lang's research interests include the application of electron spin resonance spectroscopy to the study of macromolecular aspects of fluids, semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations, chemical demonstrations, and chemistry as portrayed on postage stamps. Dr. Lang has long been active in the affairs of the American Chemical Society at the local, regional, and national level. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Chemical Heritage Foundation. In April 1999 he was elected Corresponding Member of the Finnish Chemical Society - a lifetime honorary membership "for outstanding contributions to chemical education and for success in presenting chemistry to the public."
