ACS BOOST

BOOST (Building Opportunity out of Science and Technology) Workshops are free, intensive, one-day events held at sites around host countries. You can attend BOOST workshops and earn a certificate demonstrating your completion of the program. You can also earn the chance to apply for a Trainer Leadership Institute (TLI), where you will learn leadership principles and how to teach BOOST material in your own communities.

Over 700 people joined us at our 9 workshops throughout Peru and Brazil in 2016.

Almost all participants said that they believe the information they learned with help their career; they would like to take similar courses in the future; and they would recommend BOOST to colleagues.

More people want to participate in BOOST than ACS can reach directly. We are calling on 4 participants from each of our BOOST workshop sites to be trained to reach 100 more people.

Through past Trainer Leadership Institues (TLIs), we have greatly expanded the number of people who benefit from this training. Our trainers gain valuable leadership and teaching skills, and together we help each other succeed.

We challange Trainer Leadership Institute participants to develop new ways to teach the BOOST modules. What will work best in your community?  

Workshops October 2016 - Brazil

355 science and engineering students and faculty joined us in Brazil during October, 2016. Five workshops were held at the Universidade Federal do Paraná in Curitiba, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, the Centro de Tecnologias Estratégicas do Nordeste in Recife, and the Universidade Federal do Amazonas in Manaus.

Workshops June 2016 - Peru

360 young scientists joined us at 4 workshops held in Peru during June, 2016. June workshops were held at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, the Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, and the Universidad Nacional de San Agustin in Arequipa.

TLI 2015 - Chiang Mai, Thailand

Graduate students, early career academic faculty, and early career managers from industry made up the 20 people who attended our 2015 TLI in October, 2015, at Thammasat University in Pathum Thani. Attendees were selected from applicants who particpiated in the workshops held in June, 2015.

Workshops 2015 - Thailand

More than 500 people attended the five workshops held across Thailand in June, 2015. Workshops were held at Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), Khon Kaen University, Chiang Mai Univeristy, Prince of Songkla University (Hat Yai), and Thammasat University (Pathum Thani).

TLI 2013 - Bangkok, Thailand

32 applicants from the 2013 workshops were chosen for this TLI. About 66% of participants were chemists, while 33% were not. These non-chemists worked in areas such as sociology, communications, health sciences. 22 different institutions, companies, NGOs, or government agencies were represented at this TLI.

Workshops 2013 - Indonesia and Malaysia

Over 700 people attended the 8 workshops held across Indonesia and Malaysia in February, 2013. These workshops were held at Universitas Indonesia (Jakarta, ID), Universitas Hasanuddin (Makassar, ID), Universitas Mulawarman (Balikapapan, ID), Institut Teknology Sepuluh Nopember and the Universitas Airlangga (Surabaya, ID), Universitas Sumatera Utara and Universitas Negeri Medan (Medan, ID), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Penang, MY), Universiti Malaya (Kuala Lumpur, MY), and the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Johor Bahru, MY).
