Mick Hurrey, Vice President of Product Development, Incarda Therapeutics: [00:00:00] The discussion today that I am going to be talking about is that careers are a journey, not a destination. You know, when I was growing up, my parents and my grandparents told me that you'd be on a long road a long time in a company. You'd work really hard. My grandfather worked for Shell Oil Company for 40 years, and that's what a career looked like. Then I graduated from my PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2004, and I realized that the journey is not quite a long road in one path, and how to move through that career took me some time to figure out. There's three elements of this learning over the last 15 years or so. The first of which is opportunity. Winston Churchill said that "The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, whereas an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

This island here is an island that you could rent for $2,500 a night near the Barrier Reef in Australia. There's no fresh water on this island. There's no transportation on this island. So depending on whether you're an optimist or a pessimist, it could have very different viewpoints on whether or not this was a Shangri-La or hell, depending on your point of view. I see opportunity as something where you need to look at doors as they open and really assess them and make sure you know what's going on and make decisions and be open to the idea this could be fantastic, whether or not you may or may not be scared about it.
