Cellulose is the most abundant organic compound on Earth. It is the main constituent of plant fiber; plants contain on average 33% cellulose, and cotton is the purest form at 90%. Cellulose is a linear polymer of as many as 10,000 D-glucose units. Cellulose from wood and cotton is used in the manufacture of paper, cardboard, cellophane, and rayon.
