(–)-Galanthamine (also known simply as galantamine) is an alkaloid that was isolated in 1952 by N. Proskurnina and A. Yakovleva from the Caucasian snowdrop (Galanthus woronowii). It is also produced in other flowering plant genera such as Narcissus. It is a cholinesterase inhibitor that is used to treat Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive diseases. A new synthesis of galanthamine was developed last year by P. Magnus and co-workers.
