Nitrogen triiodide is a dark red solid with extreme shock sensitivity. Some chemists may remember playing with it by stepping on small crystals to make it explode with a gunshot-like sound. It is often prepared as a 1:1 adduct with ammonia (NI3NH3). Because it is so sensitive, NI3 has no commercial uses.
