Robert Atkinson is the founder and president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a D.C.-based technology policy think tank. Before coming to ITIF, Dr. Atkinson was vice president of the Progressive Policy Institute, and he previously worked as the first executive director of the public-private Rhode Island Economic Policy Council and as project director at the former Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. Dr. Atkinson has been a member of several national commissions; he currently chairs the National Surface Transportation Infrastructure Financing Commission and serves on the Task Force on National Security in the Information Age. He has testified before Congress, appeared frequently in the media, written and conducted research on innovation, and is a board or advisory council member of many bodies, including the Alliance for Public Technology, the Information Policy Institute, and the Internet Education Foundation. He is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Atkinson received his Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
