James Smith is the director of the Center for Industrial Research Applications and a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University (WVU). His teaching, research, and service have earned him many awards, including the 1989, 1995, and 1997 Outstanding Researcher Award from the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.  He has been the principal or co-principal investigator for 90 research contracts and has published more than 200 refereed conference papers, journal articles, and reports. He is widely respected as a leader for his development of advanced technology solutions and innovative design concepts, resulting in 26 U.S. patents and the creation or continuation of numerous business efforts. Prior to joining the WVU faculty in 1984, he was a research engineer for the U.S. Department of Energy. Dr. Smith is the 2009 President of SAE International, and has served on the organization’s Board of Directors from 2005 to 2008. He earned his Ph.D. in engineering from WVU.
