Jose Almirall is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Director of the International Forensic Research Institute, at Florida International University (FIU). Prior to his 1998 academic appointment at FIU, he was a practicing forensic scientist at the Miami-Dade Police Department Crime Laboratory for 12 years, where he testified in over 100 criminal cases. He has authored a book and over 90 peer-reviewed scientific publications in the field of analytical and forensic chemistry, presented over 400 papers and workshops, and mentored over 30 graduate students in forensic chemistry research. Dr. Almirall was the founding chairman of the Forensic Education Programs Accreditation Committee of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS), is a fellow of the AAFS. He currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Department of Forensic Sciences for the State of Virginia, and on editorial boards of three forensic journals. He is a co-founder of International Forensic Services, LLC, a company devoted to improving forensic science services globally. He has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.
