ACS Endorses National Climate Adaptation Strategy

February 28, 2022

The Honorable Christopher Coons
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Coons:

On behalf of the American Chemical Society, it is my pleasure to endorse S.3531, National Climate Adaptation and Resilience Strategy Act. ACS represents over 150,000 chemists and chemical engineers and is among the nation’s oldest and largest professional scientific societies.

Addressing the global climate crisis is a priority for ACS. Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations are increasing at a rate never observed before, primarily due to emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Extreme weather and related events, such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, heatwaves and wildfires, are increasing in frequency and intensity threatening Americans’ physical, social, and economic well-being. Unfortunately, due to years of inaction, even with serious immediate reductions in GHG emissions, we will be living with the consequences for decades.

S. 3531 is an important step to creating a unified federal response to adapting to our changing global climate and ecosystem. By establishing a coordinated and empowered office within the Office of the President, the White House will ensure it has access to timely guidance and information in federal efforts. We can no longer hope this issue will solve itself. Instead, we must confront the future we are facing, and adapt so future generations may be prepared.

Thank you again for your hard work on this important legislation. Please do not hesitate to contact me, or Carl Maxwell (c_maxwell@acs.org) should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Anthony Pitagno
