American Chemical Society names Brennecke editor, Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25, 2010 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) Board of Directors today announced that Joan F. Brennecke, Ph.D., of the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed the new editor of the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data.

She assumes the editorship from Kenneth Marsh, Ph.D. Over the past 20 years, Marsh’s leadership has bolstered the ACS journal’s position as the leading publication in the chemical and engineering data community.

Brennecke’s research is focused on experimental aspects of thermodynamics, separations, supercritical fluids, ionic liquids, and improvements in energy efficiency and carbon dioxide capture. Her research group has developed, synthesized, and tested ionic liquids for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas. She holds three patents and has authored or co-authored more than 100 research articles.

Her research has been published in multiple ACS journals, including the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Journal of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Reviews. In addition, Brennecke has served as an editorial advisory board member for Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research and the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data.

Brennecke earned a B.S. in chemical engineering at the University of Texas and an M.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois. She began her academic career at the University of Illinois, where she was a teaching assistant before becoming an assistant professor in 1989. In 1994, she joined the University of Notre Dame as an assistant professor, becoming a full professor in 1998. Since 2003, Brennecke has been the Keating-Crawford Professor of Chemical Engineering at Notre Dame. In addition, she currently serves as the director of the Notre Dame Energy Center and the Sustainable Energy Initiative.

“We are pleased and fortunate to welcome Dr. Brennecke as the new editor for the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data,” said Susan King, senior vice-president of ACS Publications.   “Recognized by the community through numerous awards, including the ACS Ipatieff Prize, the J.M. Prausnitz Award, and the Department of Energy’s E. O. Lawrence Award, Dr. Brennecke brings to the journal a background of accomplished research and publications, with the leadership and expertise to build upon the success achieved under the excellent stewardship of Dr. Marsh over his 20-year tenure as Editor.”

About the Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data: The Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data is a monthly publication of the American Chemical Society that reports on experimental, evaluated and predicted data on the physical, thermodynamic, and transport properties of well-defined materials including complex mixtures of known compositions and systems of environmental and biochemical interest. More information about the journal is available at www.pubs.acs.org/jced.
