Boston children to conduct chemistry activities during chemists’ national meeting outreach event

WASHINGTON, August 6, 2015 — Kids and families can learn more about the fascinating world of chemistry through hands-on, age-appropriate activities at the Children’s Creativity Museum on Aug. 15, 2015. Members of the American Chemical Society’s (ACS’) local sections will lead the activities.

The Presidential Outreach Event, “Exploring Our World through Chemistry,” will include eight tables of hands-on activities:

  • Floating Letters – Using chemistry, explore the properties of M&M © and Skittles © candies and determine how these candies we love melt in your mouth and not in your hands.
  • Iron for Breakfast – Using a strong magnet, extract iron (an essential nutrient) from breakfast cereal. Kids and parents alike are amazed at the properties of this element.
  • Pencil Electrolysis -- Using the graphite in pencils, conduct electricity and split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This hands-on, color-coded reaction is easily seen.

The event is free, but you must pay for admission to the Boston Children’s Museum.
