American Chemical Society names Sébastien Lecommandoux as the new editor-in-chief of Biomacromolecules

WASHINGTON, Dec. 12, 2019 — The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) today named Sébastien Lecommandoux, Ph.D., of the University of Bordeaux, France, as the new editor-in-chief of Biomacromolecules. Founded in 2000, Biomacromolecules is a leading forum for the dissemination of cutting-edge research at the interface of polymer science and biology.

Lecommandoux is full professor at the University of Bordeaux. He is director of the Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques (LCPO-CNRS) and is leading the group Polymer Self-Assembly & Life Sciences. Lecommandoux brings a wealth of knowledge of the editorial process to Biomacromolecules. Since 2013, he has been associate editor of Biomacromolecules, and he currently serves on the editorial advisory boards of Bioconjugate Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Biomaterials Science and Polymers.

“I am so excited to start this new position and work with the international Biomacromolecules team to push forward the journal’s position as the go-to place for cutting-edge results at the interface between polymer science and biology,” says Lecommandoux. “We just celebrated the 20th anniversary of Biomacromolecules, and our challenge is to continue to develop this interface that is critical to solve many of the current challenges in our modern and ever-changing society. I am interested in expanding the journal’s focus into exciting areas of research, such as bio-inspired to bio-sourced polymers; renewable, biodegradable and biocompatible polymers; bio-catalysis; biomaterials; and regenerative medicine or advanced pharmaceutics.”

Lecommandoux’s research focuses include polypeptide and polysaccharide-based block copolymer  self-assembly, the design of polymersomes for drug delivery and theranostics, as well as biomimetic approaches toward design of synthetic viruses and artificial cells. He has pioneered the design of smart polymer self-assemblies, especially controlling the conformation of polypeptides. He developed stimuli-responsive polymer vesicles as efficient nanocarriers presenting multivalent interactions with biological receptors. Recently, he tackled a new challenge consisting of the bottom-up design of functional synthetic cells from compartmentalized polymer structures, combining multi-component and multi-scale self-assembly of biologically inspired building blocks.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Professor Lecommandoux as the editor-in-chief of Biomacromolecules. As only the second editor-in-chief in its history, Professor Lecommandoux is uniquely positioned to shape the trajectory of Biomacromolecules, and we are excited to work with him on his vision for the journal,” says James Milne, Ph.D., acting president, ACS Publications Division. “I would also like to extend ACS’ gratitude for the significant contributions of Professor Ann-Christine Albertsson, the inaugural editor, in building Biomacromolecules into the leading publication in the field.”

About the American Chemical Society
The American Chemical Society, the world’s largest scientific society, is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. The Society is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple databases, peer-reviewed journals and scientific conferences. The Society does not conduct research, but publishes and publicizes peer-reviewed scientific studies. Through its Publications Division, ACS publishes 60 peer-reviewed journals and many eBooks, including digital archives of legacy scientific research published since the Society’s founding, as well as the industry-leading weekly news periodical, Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature. Its Publications Division offers high-quality service to authors and readers, including rapid time to publication, cutting-edge web and mobile delivery platforms and comprehensive open-access options. The Society's main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
