American Chemical Society headquarters attains esteemed LEED Platinum® recertification

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2020 — The two American Chemical Society (ACS) headquarters buildings in Washington, D.C., have earned LEED Platinum® recertification from the U.S. Green Building Council, affirming the Society’s commitment to advance sustainability and the environment.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (LEED®) is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. ACS reached the premier level within the LEED® green building program by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, building materials selection, innovation in design, location and transportation, and indoor environmental quality.

The Society upholds its high standards by seeking recertification for the Hach and Othmer buildings every five years and is part of a metropolitan community dedicated to the vital mission of sustainability. Washington, D.C., was named the world’s first LEED Platinum® city in 2017.

“Green buildings lower global carbon emissions, reduce electricity and water bills, and create new green jobs, offering us a better quality of life that we can all experience in our health, the air we breathe and the water we drink,” says ACS CEO Thomas Connelly Jr., Ph.D. “This type of sustainable practice demonstrates the power of chemistry and the chemical enterprise to provide solutions to the world’s most pressing problems.”

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people. The Society is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a specialist in scientific information solutions (including SciFinder® and STN®), its CAS division powers global research, discovery and innovation. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
