ACS announces winner of the ACS Central Science Disruptors & Innovators Prize

WASHINGTON, July 2, 2020 — The American Chemical Society (ACS) Publications Division and ACS Central Science are pleased to announce the winner of the ACS Central Science Disruptors & Innovators Prize, Zhenan Bao, Ph.D, of Stanford University.

“I am incredibly thrilled and humbled by this recognition. It would not have been possible without my creative and hardworking students and many mentors who supported me over the years,” says Bao.

The ACS Central Science Disruptors & Innovators Prize was established last year in order to showcase exceptional science by recognizing an individual who, through their innovative research, is advancing the central science of chemistry. Bao is recognized with this prize for her extensive and disruptive research in the field of conducting polymers and their applications, as well as her outstanding advances in the development of artificial skin and other medical devices.

Bao is department chair and K.K. Lee professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University. She founded the Stanford Wearable Electronics Initiative (eWEAR) in 2016 and serves as its faculty director. Bao is a co-founder and on the board of directors for C3 Nano and PyrAmes, both silicon-valley venture-funded start-ups. She received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1995, and has over 500 refereed publications and over 65 U.S. patents.

“I am honored to present this inaugural award to Professor Bao,” says Carolyn Bertozzi, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of ACS Central Science. “Through her groundbreaking research and discoveries, Professor Bao serves as an inspiration to the scientific community, and is affirming chemistry’s place as the central science.”

“Professor Bao embodies the entrepreneurial scientific spirit the ACS Central Science Disruptors & Innovators Prize seeks to highlight,” says James Milne, Ph.D., president, ACS Publications Division. “Her research is emblematic of the exciting work that pushes the field of chemistry to new heights.”

As a part of the award, Bao will present a lecture at the ACS Central Science Disruptors & Innovators Symposium, which will be held during a virtual event taking place in late August 2020. More details will be announced soon.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people. The Society is a global leader in providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a specialist in scientific information solutions (including SciFinder® and STN®), its CAS division powers global research, discovery and innovation. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.
