WASHINGTON, Nov. 14, 2022 – The Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) announce a publishing collaboration on Environment & Health, a new, peer-reviewed, open access journal, committed to exploring the relationship between the environment and human health.

"The launch of Environment & Health is timely and important to create a healthier world,” says founding Editor-in-Chief Guibin Jiang. “We have witnessed rapid growth in publications devoted to discovering the relationships between environmental exposure and human health and the potential public health consequences. The journal will provide a world-class home to impactful research on environmental health, especially work that does not fall within the scope of the existing environmental journals. As the founding editor in chief, I am excited to lead this new journal to build its superior quality and global influence."

Jiang is an academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences, and he is the director of State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology. His research interests are environmental science, and toxicology and health. He has published approximately 1,000 papers in peer-reviewed journals and delivered upward of 700 keynote presentations.

Environment & Health will report the health consequences for individuals and communities of changing and hazardous environmental factors. Article topics of interest include air, water and soil pollution; exposomics; environmental epidemiology; innovative analytical methodology and instrumentation; environmental toxicology; environmental microbiology, pathogen and environmental transmission mechanisms of diseases; environmental modeling, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence; emerging contaminants; climate change and related health effects; health impacts of energy evolution and carbon neutralization; food and drinking water safety; occupational exposure and medicine; innovations in environmental technologies for better health; as well as policies and international relations concerned with environmental health.

To support the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, the journal aims to publish research that will help formulate policies to create a healthier world. Environment & Health will begin accepting submissions in February 2023. The inaugural issue will be available in July 2023.

“We are thrilled to enter this international collaboration with the prestigious RCEES,” says James Milne, Ph.D., president, ACS Publications Division. “Environment & Health will create a world-class platform for the best research into the links between the environment and human health. We are confident this journal will make significant contributions to international policy developments in one of the most important challenges we currently face.”

“Relying on the academic strengths of RCEES in the field of environment and human health, and the rich publishing experience of ACS Publications, the establishment of Environment & Health will provide fertile ground for environmental health research,” says Zhiyun Ouyang, Ph.D., director of RCEES. “We hope that the close collaboration between two organizations will advance the environmental health discipline and provide high-quality support to the scientific community.”

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a nonprofit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. ACS’ mission is to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and all its people. The Society is a global leader in promoting excellence in science education and providing access to chemistry-related information and research through its multiple research solutions, peer-reviewed journals, scientific conferences, eBooks and weekly news periodical Chemical & Engineering News. ACS journals are among the most cited, most trusted and most read within the scientific literature; however, ACS itself does not conduct chemical research. As a leader in scientific information solutions, its CAS division partners with global innovators to accelerate breakthroughs by curating, connecting and analyzing the world’s scientific knowledge. ACS’ main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), formerly known as the Institute of Environmental Chemistry of CAS founded in 1975, is the first comprehensive research institution engaged in research on eco-environmental science and technology in China. The main research directions of RCEES are environmental processes and control of persistent toxic pollutants, health risks of environmental pollution, remediation of water pollution and drinking water treatment, coupled human-Natural system, urban and regional sustainable development, and environmental biotechnology.
