Community Service Ideas

Give back to your community! Your ChemClub can make a difference by helping others in your area. Consider doing a service projects in conjunction with other school-based clubs, your ACS local section, or a nearby collegiate ACS student chapter. Here are some ideas from ChemClubs, ACS student chapters, and the web to get you started. Visit the ACS ChemClub blog to read more about what Clubs have done. What is your Club doing? - Organize and hold a Best Buddies chemistry day for children with disabilities.
- Serve a meal at a homeless shelter and then share some easy hands-on chemistry demos or activities.
- Share demonstrations and/or hands-on activities at a school or other location, such as a farmers’ market, mall, retirement home, or daycare.
- Tutor elementary/middle school students with an after-school program.
- Tutor other students within your school. Your Club could collaborate with another school organization like an academic honor society.
- Volunteer and mentor at an after school science club for elementary students.
- Volunteer at a science or children’s museum to assist with chemistry-themed activities and exhibits.
- Assist Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in earning chemistry merit badges.
- Encourage interest in science through the Science Buddies program.
- Assist local organizations in water or soil testing.
- Offer or assist at a summer science camp for youth.
- Conduct or assist in school-wide recycling efforts.
- Create a science coloring packet for a children’s hospital or library.
- Help set up for a science fair.

- Host a blood drive.
- Hold a food drive or clothing drive, such as winter coats.
- Collect toiletries and household goods to donate to a domestic abuse shelter.
- Lead a teddy bear drive for a children’s hospital or police/fire station.
- Raise money for a local, national, or international charity.
- Donate to a toy drive or select tags from a local giving tree to provide holiday gifts to children.
- Don’t forget holiday gifts for teens! See what the Under the Tree Foundation does for teens in their area.
- Send a care package to someone from your community who is serving in the military. You can also work through a larger organization.
- Collect and donate new or gently used children’s books to a local organization such as a school or library.

Bake someone happy! Make and share baked goods with community members—school staff, fire fighters, police officers, mail carriers, etc.

- Adopt a stream or other local waterway.
- Adopt-a-Highway to clean a specific stretch of road.
- Assist at a drug disposal event.
- Clean up a community or school green space for Chemists Celebrate Earth Day.
- Volunteer at a children’s hospital or Ronald McDonald House.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter.
- Volunteer at a food bank.

- Assist with Meals on Wheels.
- Connect with residents at a care center who may not have family living nearby.
- Volunteer for a crisis line, especially those that serve teens.
- Maintain a plot in a community garden and donate the produce to a local food bank.
- Run/walk as a Club for a charity event or volunteer to help with organizations like: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® or Relay for Life.
