The development and use of assessments is a crucial component of chemical education research. The process employed while developing assessments and how they can be utilized for measurement of student understanding is beneficial to both researchers and practitioners. The symposium will provide a forum for chemical education researchers and chemistry educators to share the methods they have utilized when developing assessments including validity and reliability studies. Presentations are welcome from assessment research conducted in any sub-discipline of chemistry as well as the use of assessments by practitioners. Presentations are also welcome from international speakers and student speakers at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels.

The Great Lakes Region poses a challenge for air quality mediation efforts due to the complex meteorology of the Great Lakes and large cities nearby. This session calls for submissions that address regional atmospheric chemistry topics including tropospheric ozone chemistry, modeling atmospheric chemistry in the region, impacts of wildfires on air quality, novel atmospheric observation strategies and results from recent field campaigns in the region. General atmospheric chemistry submissions which may relate to laboratory studies on atmospheric chemistry or general contributions to the field are also welcome.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl species (aka PFAS) are a large class of anthropogenic compounds that have found widespread use in chemical processing and consumer products. This is largely due to excellent thermal stability coupled with their ability to repel grease and water. These same properties ensure that PFAS persist in the environment and can accumulate in plants, animals, and humans. In addition, some of these compounds are associated with negative health outcomes including decreased fertility, vaccine resistance, developmental effects and/or delays in children, increased cholesterol levels and blood pressure, and increased risk for certain cancers. This symposium is open to a broad range of topics in PFAS science including the fate, transport, and remediation of PFAS in environmental, biological, and synthetic systems.

Are you a postdoc or faculty member that has a new chemistry-based startup that you are interested in sharing about your technology? Are you interested in discussing how your company is working with your local University Tech Transfer Office? If yes, please submit an abstract to discuss your entrepreneurial journey at the Small Chemical Business (SCHB) Division of the ACS at the Great Lakes Regional Meeting. We are interested in hearing from start-ups and established companies that may be venture-backed or bootstrapped! Let us hear your story! Do you work in a tech transfer office from a nearby University? We are also looking for Tech Transfer Office representatives to share their vision on how your University works with start-ups and technology licensees. Your story can help future small chemistry businesses power their transition from concept through to spinout. Topics such as technology patenting, technology licensing, and navigating your local area are all of interest to this audience.

Integrating chemistry with the humanities can foster chemistry appreciation for both majors and nonmajors. Innovative instructors have found creative and successful ways to contextualize chemistry within humanities disciplines. For example, chemical principles may be taught in the context of archeological or historical applications, or chemistry connections can be made to art and artists materials. This symposium includes presentations describing teaching chemistry with connections to humanities and arts disciplines, broadly defined.
