In a rapidly evolving academic landscape, traditional scholarly publishing is facing new challenges and opportunities. Emerging trends, such as the use of AI to assist in paper writing and alternative forms of research dissemination, are reshaping how scientific work is shared. This symposium will focus on how scientists, publishers, and librarians can collaborate to move beyond the idea that journal articles are the only valid outputs of scientific research. We will explore new ways to present and disseminate research that support the professional growth of early career researchers and broaden the reach and impact of scholarship. By rethinking the roles of these stakeholders, we aim to highlight how academic institutions can support more diverse and effective ways of communicating research, and how these efforts can benefit both academia and society.

Where knowing is half the battle, asking is the first step. In this seminar, we will investigate sources of food contamination, how it got there, and strategies to reduce exposure for ourselves and our loved ones. In any case of contamination, testing to find out what is present, and how much, helps determine if our food is safe to eat. Monitoring these levels as food and packaging is produced helps find issues in the supply chain, whether it is contamination in the field or through processing. This seminar will look at heavy metal testing by ICPMS and speciation of those heavy meals by LC-ICPMS to better understand risks. Contaminants from agricultural use or production like pesticides and cross-contamination allergens can pose significant risks to consumers. We will also look at PFAS leaching from packaging, not just those we hear about in fast food wrappers but also from snack packages, and other materials. Adequate testing and labeling allow people to make decisions that best suit their lifestyle. In food safety, we raise the questions since knowing is half the battle.
