ACS Chemical Technology Student Award
Award at a Glance
Purpose
To recognize and honor top students earning associate’s or bachelor’s degrees with the goal of joining the industrial workforce.
Description
Under this program, developed by the ACS Committee on Technician Affairs (CTA), individual 2- and 4-year academic institutions may each choose one student to honor.
CTA provides a personalized certificate that the college or university may present to its student winner. In addition, students are recognized by name during the spring ACS Meeting.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the award, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in a chemistry or chemistry-based technology program
- Aspire to work in the chemical or a related industry as a chemical technician or in another role
- Must have completed 75% of the program coursework by the time the award is presented
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity and reliability
- Demonstrate exceptional performance in the laboratory (safety, experimental setup and design, data analysis, teamwork, and problem solving)
- Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrate superior academic performance across all courses (consistently in the upper 10%)
ACS membership is not required for a nominee to be considered for the award.
Deadline
Nominations are due by January 31.
Nomination & Selection Process
The nomination and selection process is handled entirely by individual academic institutions and is carried out as follows:
- Institutions form a selection committee composed of chemistry and/or chemical technology faculty.
- The committee solicits or collects nominations, then evaluates students based on the eligibility requirements (described above).
- The selection committee selects one winner and notifies ACS of the selection using the Institution Report Form. Presentation of the award is at the discretion of the institution.
