Octane is a hydrocarbon that has a chain of eight carbon atoms, but it should not be confused with the octane rating of gasoline. Octane rating compares a fuel's antiknock properties on a scale in which 100 is pure 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (isooctane, an isomer of octane) and 0 is pure n-heptane.
